Field
From La.MuLANA wiki
A field in La-Mulana is an area in the game. Like many most castletroids, La-Mulana is divided into many areas, each with its own theming, graphical tilesets and color palettes, enemies, and music.
SPOILER ALERT
The fields of La-Mulana are (listed in the order you might end up seeing them):
- Guidance Gate
- Mausoleum of the Giants
- Endless Corridor
- Temple of the Sun
- Temple of Moonlight
- Chamber of Extinction
- Spring of the Sky
- Inferno Cavern
- Graveyard of the Giants
- Confusion Gate
- Tower of the Goddess
- Tower of Ruin
- Twin Labyrinths
- Shrine of the Mother
- Chamber of Birth
- Dimensional Corridor
- True Shrine of the Mother
Each field, other than the True Shrine of the Mother, can be accessed by a teleportation, using the Grail, two particular ROMs (for certain areas), and a number pressed on the keyboard while in the F2 screen.
Fields are divided into backside and frontside categories. It appears that there are two parallel worlds/dimensions in the ruins of La-Mulana, and each teleportation number corresponds to a pair of these fields (except 0 and 9). These pairs of fields are generally themed together:
Contrasts:
- Guidance is contrasted with Confusion.
- The respectful order of the Mausoleum is contrasted with the chaotic disorder of the Graveyard.
- Sun and Moon are obviously contrasted, as are their associations with male and female.
- Extinction and Birth are obviously contrasted as well.
Other meaningful relation:
- The Spring of the Sky is the lake that the Giants brought to the location of La-Mulana in their attempt to power a vehicle for sending Mother back to the sky. the Tower of the Goddess is that attempt at a vehicle.
- The Inferno Cavern is stated to have once been a "source of power," possibly serving the Tower of Ruin. A broken tablet in the Inferno Cavern mentions something that "should have flown with hot water" -- perhaps the Tower was originally powered by water heated by magma, but an accident flooded the Cavern with molten rock and destroyed the project.
- The Twin Labyrinths obviously correspond to each other and are nearly mirror images of each other
- The Endless Corridor and the Dimensional Corridor are linked in that they are switched. (They are also somewhat contrasting, in that the Dimensional corridor looks rather vertically-oriented, and the Endless Corridor is very horizontally oriented. "Dimensional" can also mean "having dimensions", and in that respect is the opposite of "endless".)
[edit] Other in-game areas not considered fields
- Surface (technically a frontside area)
- the Maze of Galious minigame (technically a backside area)
- the Legendary Tree (technically a frontside area)
- Hell Temple (technically a backside area)
